WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's cross country team heads to top-ranked Oregon for the third annual Bill Dellinger Invitational at Springfield Country Club on Saturday. The Deacons will face off against four top-25 teams at 1:30 p.m. ET in the 6-kilometer event. Cate Berenato, Marley Burns, Caitlin Crawford, Whitney Curry, Allie Kieffer, Anna Nosenko, Dina Nosenko, Merry Placer and Laura Rapp are racing for the Deacons. The top five runners will be scored. Wake Forest will race against No. 1 Oregon, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 17 Colorado State and No. 23 Brigham Young, as well as Cal State Fullerton, Penn State (receiving votes), Portland (receiving votes) and Texas-El Paso. The Deacons are currently ranked fifth by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Southeast Region poll, moving up one spot from the preseason rankings. The Deacons placed eighth at last year's race. Oregon's Nicole Blood captured the individual title with a time of 20:04 in the 6-kilometer event. In 2006, Michelle Sikes led the Deacons to a third-place finish with a time of 20:10.91 and a second-overall finish at the inaugural Bill Dellinger Invitational.
The Bill Dellinger Invitational honors the Oregon running legend who was a three-time Olympian and bronze medalist, as well as a Hall of Fame Duck coach. The Deacons are off next weekend before returning to action on Oct. 17, when they travel to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State Invitational. - WakeForestSports.com - |
