TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -

Wake Forest senior Michelle Sikes paced the women's cross country team to a 27th overall finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.  The Lakewood, Ohio, native finished 13th overall out of 253 runners in a time of 21:09.2 in the 6k race.

Sikes earned All-American honors as a result of her finish in the top 30.  This has been quite a week for the mathematical economics major, as she was named a Rhodes Scholar two days prior to the meet.

Following close behind Sikes was senior Erin Franklin, an all-region honoree, who finished 54th in a time of 21:41.5.  Junior Caitlin Chrisman ran a time of 22:47.3 to finish third on the team and 178th overall.  Also scoring for the Deacons was sophomore Allison Kieffer (196th, 22:58.8) and junior Meredith Placer (231st, 23:46.2).  Freshman Kelly Pollsin ran 237th in a time of 24:00.0

Wake was one of eight teams representing the ACC in the 31-team field.  Duke was top finisher with a 10th place result, followed by Virginia (14th), Virginia Tech (18th), NC State (19th), Florida State (21st), Boston College (30th) and North Carolina (31st).  Stanford won the team title for the second year in a row and third time in the last four years.  Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego was the individual champion.

The NCAA Championships concluded a very successful season for the women's cross country team.  The squad will now turn its attention to the upcoming indoor track and field season.
