AMES, Iowa - The Wake Forest University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NCAA Championships at the Iowa State Cross Country Course on Monday. The Demon Deacons concluded great seasons with strong performances in the national championship races. The men's team finished 18th in the 31-team field, collecting 488 points and the women's squad took 29th out of 31 teams, earning 651 points.

Chris Estwanik led the Demon Deacon men, taking 69th with a time of 31:27 on the 10,000 meter course. Keith Kelly of Providence was the individual champion, running the race in 30:14. Ted DeVos placed 101st with 31:46, Garick Hill ran a 31:53 for 119th, Josh Buffolino earned 139th with 32:02, Sean Nagorny crossed the line 189th in 32:29, Jimmy Butler finished 209th with a 32:45 and Ed Acosta was good for 213th in 32:49.

Sara Day paced the women Demon Deacons, placing 111th with a time of 22:03 on the 6,000 meter course. Kara Grgas-Wheeler of Colorado was the individual champion, running the race in 20:30. Risa Rutland finished 159th with a 22:29, Denise Hefferin crossed the finish line in 22:34 for 170th, Kathleen Kuhnert placed 189th in 22:46, Becca Veenstra was good for 197th with a 22:51, Nicole Kalogeropoulos ran a 23:54 for 234th and Erin Haugh turned in a 23:55 for 235th.

Arkansas won the men's cross country national championship and Colorado won the women's cross country national championship.
