Volleyball Off To 5-0 Start After First Week Of Play

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's volleyball team, off to an impressive 5-0 start in its first week of play, hits the road for several matches this week. The Demon Deacons travel to UNC Charlotte for a 7:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 8, then head to Oxford, Miss., to compete in the Ole Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. Wake will face Arkansas State and Mississippi in the first rounds of the tournament on Friday, Saturday's opponent is to be determined.

WAKE SWEEPS FIVE AT HOME, WINS DEACON INVITATIONAL
Wake Forest opened the 1999 campaign with five wins at home last week, sweeping every opponent in three-game matches. On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the Deacs dominated visiting High Point in the season opener, winning 15-3, 15-0, 15-4. Senior outside hitter Katie Horne (Nashua, NH) led the Deacons with 13 kills, five digs, and a career-high .579 hitting percentage, as the Deacons recorded an impressive team attack percentage of .534. On Friday and Saturday, Wake swept four opponents en route to the Deacon Invitational title, besting William & Mary (15-13, 15-10, 15-6), Wyoming (15-3, 15-2, 15-11), Western Carolina (15-9, 15-5, 15-11) and Montana State (15-11, 15-8, 15-13). Junior setter Julie Cowley (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) earned Tournament MVP honors for her outstanding play, averaging 14.75 assists per game in the tournament. Sophomore outside hitter Margaret Davidson (Huntsville, AL) earned All-Tournament honors as well, averaging 3.00 kills and 1.4 blocks per game while netting a .404 hitting percentage in four matches.

SCOUTING THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS
UNC Charlotte is coming off a 14-17 season and is off to a 1-2 start in 1999. The 49ers lost their season opener to Davidson (1-3), then fell to Mississippi State (2-3) and defeated Liberty (3-1) in their own tournament this past weekend. Leading UNCC through three games is sophomore middle blocker Esra Akgun (4.23 kpg) and junior setter Ozlem Ayture (13.46 apg). Arkansas State, who went 23-11 last fall, is off to a 5-1 start after defeating SE Missouri State (3-0), Belmont (3-0), Jackson State (3-0), Louisiana-Monroe (3-0) and New Mexico (3-0) while falling to Baylor (0-3). Ole Miss went 9-23 in 1998 and is currently 3-1 after topping Tennessee-Martin (3-1), Fordham (3-0), and Eastern Illinois (3-1) while falling to Air Force (0-3).

DEACONS IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Several Deacons have already etched their names in the Wake Forest record book. Senior outside hitter Katie Horne is already the WFU career leader in kills (1,297), attempts (3,610) and digs (958), while junior setter Julie Cowley already owns the career marks for assists (2,870) and assists per game (11.48). In addition, sophomores Trina Maso de Moya (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and Margaret Davidson already own career marks after having played just one season at WFU. Maso de Moya is the career leader in kills (3.81) and digs per game (4.36), while Davidson owns the career mark for blocks per game (1.31). Single-season records are held by Horne for kills (451) and attempts (1,272), by Cowley for assists (1,403) and assists per game (13.36), by Maso de Moya for kills per game (3.83), digs (496) and digs per game (4.43), by Davidson for total blocks (119) and blocks per game (1.29), and by junior Jessica Hood (Douglass, KS) for block assists (101).

MASO DE MOYA, DAVIDSON LOOKING FOR SUPER SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGNS
Deacon sophomores Trina Maso de Moya and Margaret Davidson both earned spots on the ACC All-Freshman Team in 1998 and are looking to follow up their strong rookie years with even better sophomore campaigns. Maso de Moya played in 32 matches at outside hitter last year, leading the team in kills per game (3.83) and digs per game (4.43, also best in the ACC). Davidson played all 33 contests at middle blocker, setting a new school single-season record for total blocks (119).

DEACONS RANKED SIXTH IN PRESEASON ACC POLL
Wake Forest earned a sixth-place ranking in the 1999 ACC Coaches' Preseason Poll. Clemson earned the top nod, followed by Virginia, Georgia Tech, Florida State, North Carolina, Wake, Duke, Maryland, and NC State.
