How Bizarre!!!

Deacons End 24-Match ACC Volleyball Losing Streak In Dramatic Fashion

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat NC State in five games and record its first ACC win in 11 years at Reynolds Gym on Friday night. Ironically, the win came on the same date as the last Deacon ACC win, which was October 3, 1986 over Georgia Tech.

With the win Wake Forest improves to 7-9 and 1-2 in the ACC. NC State falls to 5-13 and 0-4 in the ACC.

Wake Forest did not compete in volleyball from 1987 to 1995. Last season, the program was restarted under head coach Mary Buczek and finished the ACC season with an 0-16 mark and lost in the first round of the ACC. Including ACC regular season as well as tournament matches, the Deacons were on a 24-match losing streak dating back to the 1986 season heading into the match with NC State.

The Deacs won the first game 15-12, but lost games two and three by scores of 13-15 and 8-15. Wake Forest claimed game four 15-10 and dominated the Wolfpack in game five for the 15-8 win.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Horne (Nashua, NH) led the Deacs with 20 kills and 15 digs. Also contributing to the dramatic win was fellow sophomore Sharon Harmsworth (Wadena, Saskatchewan) who had 17 kills and 14 digs. Deacon freshman Jessica Hood (Douglass, KS) had the match's best hitting percentage with a .391. Hood had 12 kills and only three errors in 23 attempts.

NC State was led by junior Laura Kimbrell (Mt. Pleasant, SC) who recorded a match-high 22 kills and 20 digs.

Wake Forest will host North Carolina on Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym. Last season, the two teams played in an exciting five game match that the Tar Heels eventually won.
