Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Wake Forest volleyball team took the first game and Erin Borhart earned her seventh triple double of the season with 12 kills, 47 assists and 13 digs, but the Demon Deacons eventually fell to Maryland, 3-1 (30-26, 36-30, 22-30, 27-30) in the first round of the 2004 ACC tournament.

Wake opened up the first game trailing, but a kill by junior Christy Williams and a pair from Morgan Havig gave the Deacons a slight lead. A 6-0 run by the Terps closed the gap at 11-14, but Wake was able to hold onto the lead and not give it up. Coming within one at 27-28 and again at 28-29, the Terps tried to come back, but a kill by Lauren Peterson put the Deacs up in the first.

In the second game, the two teams fought for the lead, knotting the score eight times, until Maryland went on a 4-0 run ending at 13-11. The Terps were able to increase the lead with a 9-1 run ending at 23-16, but Wake fought back and answered with six straight points of its own. A block by Havig and a kill by freshman Michael Faulkner continued to chip away at the lead, but a pair of kills by Maryland ended the game, 30-26.

Maryland opened the third game taking a small lead and held onto it. Coming to the line, Klaryssa Henry knocked in a service ace to tie the score at 10 all. Keeping it close for the next few serves, a six point run by the Terps at 14-13 gave Maryland the lead. Holding onto it for the remainder of the game, the Terps took the third, 30-22.

In the fourth game, Maryland went out to an early 5-1 lead. A kill by Stern brought her to the line to serve for four points and brought the game within two. A block by Williams at 18-17 closed the gap some more and then a kill by Borhart knotted the score at 19 all. Tying the score six times, the teams battled for the lead, but a kill by the Terps and an error on the Deacs gave Maryland the game and the match, 30-27.

Stern put up a team high 15 kills, while Natasha Schaefer earned the team-high 18 digs. Also on the defensive side, Havig had a match-high seven block assists, in addition to a pair of solo blocks. Faulkner had 12 kills and 12 assists, for her fourth double-double of the season.

The Demon Deacons will return to the action over Thanksgiving as they travel to the St. John's Classic in Queens, N.Y.
