WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball showed a lot of emotion Friday night, but the Demon Deacons couldn't sustain their momentum in the fifth game, falling to the Yellow Jackets 23-30, 30-20, 32-30, 37-35 and 6-15. The Deacons fall to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the ACC. The entire match was a great competition, with serves and kills playing a big factor in each game. Wake Forest lost the first two games rather quickly despite the substitution of junior Amanda Tiller for sophomore Sara Beth DeLisle on the outside. Then in the third Wake would clinch its first game with a 32-30 win and win the fourth game 37-35 after key serves from senior Trina Maso de Moya. The Deacons lost their momentum in the fifth game, losing 6-15. In the fourth and fifth games, Wake survived seven match points before succumbing to Georgia Tech on the eighth match point. Junior Ashlee Phillips led the Deacon offense with 63 assists, 11 digs, nine kills, six block assists and two service aces. Maso de Moya tallied 15 kills, a season high 33 digs and three service aces for the Deacons. Senior Margaret Davidson registered 17 kills and five blocks (four assisted). Sophomore Ashley Fisher recorded nine digs and a season high 15 kills. Sophomore Jessica Hauff posted 10 kills, nine digs and four block assists for the night.
Head coach Valorie Baker was satisfied with the Deacons level of competition and knows their hard work will eventually pay off.
"I was pleased with the way our girls played tonight. We played tough," said Baker. "It doesn't always fall the way we want it to but our girls competed tonight. If we keep playing this way, it will result in some more wins for us." Sophomore Amanda Hess totaled nine kills and 21 digs for the Yellow Jackets and senior Maja Pachale posted 18 kills and nine digs for the win. Wake Forest hosts Clemson tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Tigers are coming off a loss to the Blue Devils Friday night in four games, 20-30, 20-30, 30-27 and 24-30. Clemson is 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the ACC.
