WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell to Georgia Tech, 0-3 Friday night (22-30, 14-30, 23-30). Valerie Rydberg led the Deacons with seven kills and seven digs. Wake Forest drops to 8-7 (0-5 in the ACC), while Georgia Tech improves to 10-5 (5-0 in the ACC). The Yellow Jackets took the first game, 30-22. The Deacons took the early 2-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-4 run, causing Deacon head coach Valorie Baker to call her first time out. Wake Forest came back strong, on a 6-3 run, to bring the game within three, but the Yellow Jackets powered past the Deacons, bringing the score to 26-15. Baker called another time out. Wake Forest took seven of the next eleven points, but it was not enough as Georgia Tech claimed game one. Georgia Tech earned the first points of game two, but Wake Forest knotted the score immediately, 1-1. Wake Forest stayed within two points until Georgia Tech went on a 5-0 run. Baker called a time out with the Yellow Jackets leading, 8-3. Despite four consecutive unanswered serves by the Jackets after the time out, Wake Forest fought back to bring the score to 13-20, but it was not enough as Georgia Tech took the next four points to go up 24-13. Baker called another time out, but the Yellow Jackets took six of the next seven points to secure game two, 30-14. It was the lowest point total by the Deacons in any game this season. The Jackets came out strong, jumping to a 7-3 lead in game three. The Deacons inched back with three consecutive serves to bring them within one. Wake Forest would stay within two until Georgia Tech went up, 11-8. Again the Deacons fought back and tied the score at 14. Jenna Doane served to give the Deacons their first lead of the game, but Georgia Tech answered to knot the game at 15. The teams swapped for the one point advantage in each of the next 16 points, until Georgia Tech took the two point edge, 24-22. Baker called a time out trailing, 22-25 and again at 23-28. The Yellow Jackets would score the next two points to take game three, 30-23.
The Yellow Jacket win extended their 2004 winning streak to eight matches and marked their 10th straight victory against the Deacons since the 2000 season. The Deacons have not dropped five straight games since that same year. Wake Forest returns to action Saturday night at 6 p.m. when the Deacons host Clemson in Reynolds Gymnasium. |
