Knoxville, Tenn. - KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Valerie Rydberg and Erin Borhart both posted double-doubles en route to leading the Wake Forest women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-27) victory over No. 24 Purdue. The win for the Demon Deacons is the first over a ranked opponent this season and moves Wake Forest to 4-1 overall.

Wake Forest opened the match with a 4-1 lead, but Purdue was able to come back at seven to tie the game. After which, a kill by Rydberg, took the Deacs on an 8-2 run, pushing Wake Forest ahead, 15-9. After a timeout, Purdue brought the game within four, until Wake was able to once again push ahead at 21-17, taking seven of the next 10 points. During that run, senior Kim Stern knocked down two kills and a solo block. With a kill from Christy Williams at 29-22 and a service error by Purdue, the Deacs were able to close out the first game, 30-22.

In game two, the Boilermakers were able to score first off a kill, but the Deacs were able to tie it and then take the lead with Stern serving for five straight points, ending at 8-3. As the game continued, Wake was able to pull even farther ahead as Rydberg notched two straight kills, taking Purdue on a 7-2 run ending at 23-14. Despite putting up three points in a row at 25-14, Purdue was unable to catch up to Wake Forest and the Deacs took game two, 30-19.

The Demon Deacons went up 4-1 early in game three from two straight service aces by Natasha Schaefer. Wake increased the point margin to six at 14-8 on a kill by Lauren Petersen. At 16-12, Purdue was able to cut the deficit to four, but the Deacons were able to hold onto the lead with a pair of aces by Rydberg. At 28-23, the Boilermakers made an attempt to capture the game with four straight points, but were unsuccessful, as a kill by Petersen secured the victory for the Deacs.

As a team, Wake Forest out-hit Purdue, .462 to .274 and posted five team blocks to the Boilermakers two. Rydberg, who posted her third double-double of the season led the Deacs with 16 kills and 12 digs in addition to three service aces. Borhart also earned her third double-double of the season with 13 digs and 40 assists.

 

 

Wake Forest will return to action for the final game of the Domino's Pizza Lady Vols Classic tonight against UT-Martin at 5 p.m
