Juniors Erin Borhart and Valerie Rydberg both posted double-doubles en route to leading the Wake Forest women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-22, 29-31, 30-22, 30-26) victory over Marshall, in the second match of the Demon Deacon Invitational. Going into tonight's match against Connecticut, Wake Forest remains the only undefeated team in the tournament.
In the first game of the match, the two teams kept the score close, tying the game six times. At the 17-16 mark, Wake Forest was able to break away after an intense rally, that ended with a spectacular solo block by senior Morgan Havig. From this point, the Deacs held onto the lead and took the game 30-22. Havig, who is having an outstanding tournament, posted two solo blocks and a match-high seven block assists.
In the second game, the teams once again played evenly, but the Herd was able to find a small lead at the 3-7 mark, leaving the Deacs struggling to catch up. At 25-25, the two teams battled for the game-point four times, but Marshall was able to come through and take its only game of the day.
Wake Forest opened the third game in a dominate fashion, taking its opponents on a 16-4 run from the beginning. Although the Herd was able to catch up, it wasn't enough as the Deacs took it in the end, 30-22. In the fourth, Wake was able to find a small lead and they held onto it, closing out the match, 30-26.
Rydberg, who put up 16 kills and 14 digs posted her first double-double of the season, while Borhart found 11 digs and 49 assists for one of her own. Natasha Schaefer also had an impressive outing for the team, notching a career-high 23 digs. For Marshall, Kelly-Anne Billingy put up a double-double, with 10 digs and a match-high 23 kills.
Wake Forest will return to action tonight in the final match of the Deacon Invitational against Connecticut at 7 p.m.
