WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest finished 5-3 at its home invitational on Saturday at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Demon Deacons opened their 2008 spring schedule by hosting the eight-team invitational.

Wake Forest earned sweeps of Gardner-Webb and NC State. The Deacons split with Winthrop and dropped two games to Get Low, a team comprised of former collegiate volleyball players.

Several Deacons turned in solid performances on the day. Abby Miller and Megan Thornberry led Wake's back row play. Thornberry averaged 4.87 digs per game, while Miller finished with 4.25 digs per game.

Lauren McIntyre and Natalie Mullikin led the Deacs' defense at the net. Mullikin averaged 1.25 blocks per game, and McIntyre was right behind with 1.19 blocks per game.

Offensively, Mullikin and Kristen White led the Deacon attack. White finished with a team-high 2.75 kills per game, while Mullikin averaged 2.38 kills per game.

As a team, Wake Forest averaged 19.5 digs per game and 4.25 blocks per game.

Each match consisted of two games with rally scoring to 25. Each team played four matches on the day.

Former Deacon standout Trina Maso de Moya was a member of Get Low. She finished her collegiate career as one of the most decorated players in Wake Forest volleyball history. A letterwinner from 1998-2001, she was the 2000 ACC Player of the Year. Maso de Moya was a three-time first team All-ACC honoree. She holds the school's single-match, single-season and career records for both kills and digs.

The Deacons return to action this weekend with another home invitational at Reynolds Gymnasium. Wake Forest will welcome in Duke, Furman and Virginia Tech.

Wake will host Appalachian State on April 9 in a combined training session from 7-9:30 p.m. The session will conclude with an exhibition match between the two squads.

The Deacs wrap up their spring schedule with a third home invitational on Saturday, April 12.

Admission at Reynolds Gymnasium is free for all of Wake Forest's spring competition play dates.
