CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The gloomy weather delayed events at the Western Carolina Invitational, but a little light rain wasn't enough to stop the Demon Deacon track team from placing first in six events in Cullowhee on Saturday. Molly Kennedy took top ten finishes in four events, including first place overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.72 sprint. In the high jump, Kennedy tied the first place mark with a 5-03.00 performance, in addition to earning high marks in the javelin throw and a first place triple jump mark. Junior Carly Mauch placed first in the Javelin competition with a 132-09 mark and took fourth in the hammer throw with a 130-08 performance. Jill Ahrens took a first place finish in the pole vault, beating the next best competitor by a full six inches with an 11-07.75 performance. Thomas Sensing set a new personal record in the shot put with his first place mark, notching a 51-11.25 throw to top his former best of 51-0.50. Sensing also took first place in the discus throw with a 153-03 performance. Freshman Joel Fletcher topped his 12.25 100m sprint performance at the Wake Forest Open with an 11.98 finish in Cullohwee. Oderah Nwazee finished one place behind Fletcher with a time of 11.98. In addition, Nwaeze's 20-10.75 long jump finish was good for a third place tie with Western Carolina athlete Rashad Herndon. Nick Deuschle led the WFU men's pack in the mid distance races, placing fifth in the 1500m dash with a 4:17.80 run. In the women's 1500m run, Adele Mitchell finished seventh with a 5:10.71 run, followed immediately by Suzie Clinchy in eighth place (5:12.91) and Kelly Laffey in ninth (5:18.85).
Mary Alice Howard placed eighth in the 800m run with a 2:25.52 performance, followed by Hannah McArdle in 13th place (2:31.70). Next week, qualifying members of the Wake Forest roster will compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
