Wake Forest Relays Opens With Women's Heptathlon and Men's Decathlon
Findlay's Thomas and Indiana (PA)'s Spickler lead after day one.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Corissa Thomas of the University of Findlay leads the heptathlon, while Brian Spickler of the Indiana University of Pennsylavania is in first in the decathlon, after the first day of competition at the 1998 Wake Forest Relays.
The Relays will continue Friday and Saturday at Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest Unversity campus. Friday's highlights include the conclusions of the heptathlon and decathlon, plus the finals in the javelin, shot put, long jump, pole vault and the 5,000 meters.
Thomas jumped out to an early lead in the heptathlon by finishing first in the 100 meter hurdles in the meet's first event. She ran the race in a time of 15.80. Thomas maintained her lead with a jump of 1.52 meters in the high jump. She recorded a shot put throw of 9.19 meters and finished the 200 meters with a time of 27.72. Her four event total is 2,554 points. Jen Carlsen of Louisville is a close second with 2,548 points. Carlsen gained 131 points on Thomas in the 200 meters, the final event of the day, with a time of 25.68.
The final events in the heptathlon on Friday will be the long jump, javelin throw, and the 800 meters.
Spickler finished the first five of the decathlon events with 3,654 points. He finished the 100 meters with a time of 11.32, recorded a 6.66 meters jump in the long jump, and a throw of 12.09 meters in the shot put. He trailed Wake Forest's Joe Ladapo after those three events but took over the lead after the high jump with a jump 1.85 meters. He extended his lead in the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 49.31. Ladapo fell to fifth place with 3,384 points while Dave Lichenstein of Lynchburg is in second with 3,491 points.
On Friday, the final events of the decathlon will be the 110 meter high hurdles, the discus throw, pole vault, the javelin throw, and the 1,500 meters.
