Kaiwai and Kurz Win at Rolex Indoor Tennis Championships
DALLAS, Texas - Wake Forest's doubles team of junior Nicola Kaiwai (Wellington, New Zealand) and freshman Dorothee Kurz (Pforzheim, Germany) defeated Auburn of Montgomery's team of Cecelia Hincapie and Xiernena Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-1, to win the doubles consolation draw of the 1998 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships in Dallas, Texas.
Kaiwai and Kurz, currently ranked 6th in the national rankings, lost in the first round of the 16-team showcase event, but rebounded to win three consecutive matches to capture the consolation title. They defeated Zofia Csapo and Angela Lawerence of Pepperdine, the 2nd-ranked team in the country, by scores of 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, and then defeated 10th-ranked Adrien Jenkins and Eline Chiew of BYU, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, to advance to the finals.
The Rolex National Intercollegiates, the third leg of the collegiate grand slam, features a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles field for men and women and is mainly comprised of qualifiers from regional championships held across the country during the fall. Overall, more than 5,000 players from nearly 600 schools attempted to qualify for the Rolex National Indoors, the showcase event of the Rolex Intercollegiate tennis program.
