April 7, 2007 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 15th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team battled to win the doubles point, but it wasn't enough to get past sixth-ranked Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets came back to win the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Courts. The Deacs held on to win the all-important doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. At the first court, Alexandra Hirsch and Ashlee Davis kept up with Georgia Tech's 40th-ranked team of Amanda Craddock and Alison Silverio and eventually picked up the 9-7 victory. But the Yellow Jackets recorded a 9-7 victory of their own after defeating Christine Simpson and Sierra Poske at the third spot. All eyes turned to No. 2 doubles where Wake's Sasha Kulikova and Ana Jerman were battling Amanda McDowell and Kristi Miller. With the Deacs leading for the majority of the match, the Yellow Jackets tied the match at 8-all, but the home team dominated in the tiebreaker as the duo won 7-1 to clinch the point. Georgia Tech (16-4, 7-1) quickly rebounded in singles picking up its first point at No. 3 where No. 69 Craddock defeated Jerman in straight 6-1 sets. No. 103 Taryn Rudman defeated Simpson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6, while No. 46 Striplin followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5. No. 89-ranked Davis was the only Deac to win in the first set (6-3), but No. 80 Silverio came back and clinched the match by winning sets two and three, 6-4, 6-0, at the second position.
At No. 1, fifth-ranked Miller took the first set 6-2 over Hirsch. The junior battled back to win the second set 6-4 and was leading in the third, but Miller came back to take the set and match, 6-3. Wake Forest's lone singles point came at the No. 4 spot where Kulikova overcame a one-set deficit and defeated No. 116 Amanda McDowell 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Kulikova has now won nine straight matches and now owns a 14-2 singles record. The Deacs (12-5, 6-3) host eighth-ranked Clemson on Sunday in a noon match at the Indoor Tennis Center. - WakeForestSports.com - |
