TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 17th ranked Wake Forest women's tennis squad picked up its second Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season today with a 5-4 victory over 20th ranked Florida State (16-4, 2-1 ACC). The two teams split the singles matches, 3-3, and the Deacons won two of the three doubles points. It was Wake's seventh consecutive win over the Seminoles.

Wake Forest (7-7, 2-0 ACC) won singles matches at flights No. 1, 2 and 4. Freshman Janet Bergman continued to play well at the No. 2 position, defeating Nanette Duxin 6-3, 6-4. The nation's ninth-ranked singles player, Wake's Mariel Verban, also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 1 position against Alida Gallovits. The victory gives Verban 31 wins on the year, her entire victory total in 1998. Jackie Houston also won in singles competition with a straight set victory at the No. 4 flight position.

It was the doubles matches that proved to be the deciding factor. The Deacons' top duo of Bergman and Verban easily defeated FSU's Duxin and Gallovits, 8-4. It was the team of Houston and Maren Haus that won the match for Wake Forest, defeating Kia Asberg and Natalie Carratala at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

The Deacons will return to action on Monday, March 29 when they travel to Athens, Ga. to take on the third-ranked Bulldogs from the University of Georgia.
