WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with two wins over the weekend, defeating Virginia 5-2 and Virginia Tech 6-1. The Demon Deacons now stand at 5-5 for 2008 and 2-0 in conference play. Next up for team is a spring break match with San Diego State, set for Thursday, March 13 in San Diego, Calif. Wake Forest opened the weekend with a 2-1 doubles point win over the Cavaliers (5-5) and followed with four straight-set singles wins from Sasha Kulikova, Christian Tara, Emilee Malvehy and Katarina Reveche to take the 5-2 overall victory. On Sunday, Wake snagged its second ACC doubles point, led by Sasha Kulikova and Sierra Poske at No.1 who posted an 8-2 win over Hokies Inga Beerman and Yasmin Hamza. Aileen Davis and Alex Hirsch sealed the point victory with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Kulikova improved to 9-1 for the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Hamza at No. 2. Christian Tara then gave the Deacons a 3-0 lead by defeating Jessica Long 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. After breezing through her first set against J.J. Larson 6-1, Wake's Sierra Poske fell behind 5-6 in the second set, but rallied to win the tiebreaker for a 7-6 win to clinch the Demon Deacon victory.
Alex Hirsch, Emilee Malvehy, and Katarina Reveche ended their matches in super tiebreakers, with Hirsch taking an 18-16 win over Beerman, Malvehy defeating Jessica Brouwer 7-5 and Reveche dropping a 10-7 decision to Holly Johnson. WFU 5, UVA 2
