A four-time All-American and Wake Forest's all-time leader in singles (129) and doubles (117) victories, Demon Deacon tennis legend Janet Bergman returned to Winston-Salem in January 2003 to serve as Coach Fleishman's assistant after playing the previous four years under him. Named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Women's Tennis Team, honoring the top 50 women's tennis players in ACC history, Bergman captured All-ACC honors all four years and competed in the NCAA Championships every season as well.
Bergman capped off a glorious career at Wake Forest by posting a 28-13 singles record and a 36-6 mark in doubles play her senior year, earning the 2002 ITA Southeast Region Senior Player of the Year award. Ranked as high as sixth in singles and first in doubles, she was a mainstay in the top 25 throughout her career. Helping the Demon Deacons qualify for the NCAA Championships all four years, Bergman helped lead Wake to the quarterfinals in 2000 and 2002. Earning All-America honors in doubles three straight years, Bergman also captured All-America honors in singles play her junior year.
Named the 1999 Rookie of the Year in the ACC and the ITA Southeast Region, Bergman burst on to the collegiate tennis scene winning 30 singles matches her freshman season. Winning the 2000 National Clay Court doubles title, Bergman and doubles partner Bea Bielik were finalists at the 2001 National Indoor Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships in 2000 and again in 2001.
Bergman graduated from Wake Forest in the summer of 2002 with a degree in communication. She spent the remainder of the calendar year working for her father before taking the assistant coaching job at her alma mater in January.
