Wake Forest-Virginia Game Notes
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After facing off in the regular season finale on Sunday, No. 19 Wake Forest and No. 8 Virginia will renew acquaintances on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. (ET) in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ACC Women's Soccer Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. All games of the conference tournament will be shown on ACC Select. Wake Forest claimed the sixth seed in the tournament, while Virginia is the No. 3 seed. The winner of the match between the Deacs and Cavaliers will face either Florida State or Virginia Tech in the semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ET). Wake Forest claimed a 1-0 win over Virginia on Sunday to finish the regular season. The defenses of both teams dominated the game as only 10 total shots were taken in the contest. The Deacons only attempted three shots, but were able to turn one of those shots into the only goal of the game, as Amy Smerdzinski scored in the 60th minute to lift Wake Forest to victory. Virginia enters the postseason with a 12-4-2 record and a 6-3-1 record in conference play. The Cavaliers are ranked eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Meghan Lenczyk leads Virginia with 11 goals on the season and 23 points. Lauren Alwine has a team-high 13 assists and 21 points overall. Celeste Miles has played all but 18 minutes in goal this season for Virginia. Miles has a record of 12-4-2 in net with eight shutouts. She has allowed 16 goals on the year, posting a 0.88 goals against average. Virginia leads the all-time series against Wake Forest, holding an 11-5-2 advantage. The two teams have met twice previously in the ACC Tournament, with each team winning once.
