No. 3 Virginia Tops No. 13 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Virginia's Tracey Lache broke a 2-2 tie in the 87th minute to lead the third-ranked Cavaliers to a 3-2 women's soccer victory over No. 13 Wake Forest Sunday at Spry Stadium.

After a 1-1 halftime tie, Wake Forest (7-2, 1-2 ACC) took a 2-1 lead early in the second half on a goal from Stefanie Mathews, her second of the game and seventh of the season. Mathews also scored at the 5:31 mark in the first half off a pass from teammate Anne Shropshire.

The two teams played to a draw over the next 20 minutes until Virginia's (8-1-1, 1-1) Angela Hucles tied the score at two with her second goal of the game at 72:55 off a pass from Jill Maxwell. Fourteen minutes later, Hucles assisted Lache on the game winner at 87:03.

Wake Forest goalkeeper Beth Klein made a season-high 10 saves, but the Cavs took 18 shots to only eight for the Deacons.

Wake Forest returns to action on Friday when they travel to Auburn for a 3 p.m. game.
