Mathews Leads No. 18 Wake Forest Over No. 11 Stanford, 2-1

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Stefanie Mathews scored two goals to lead No. 18 Wake Forest (7-1) to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over No. 11 Stanford (3-4) Sunday in the Stanford/Nike Invitational.
Mathews, who also scored two goals against San Francisco on Friday in the first game of the tournament, broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 45:37 mark. She was assisted by sophomore Anne Shropshire. Mathews added another goal at 80:57 when she found the back of the net off a pass from teammate Karli Schilling.
Stanford cut the lead to 2-1 at 82:45 with a goal from Karin Brett, but the Deacons held the Cardinal scoreless for the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.
Goalkeeper Beth Klein made seven saves for Wake Forest and the Deacons won despite being outshot 10-7 by Stanford.
Mathews, Klein, Schilling and freshman defender Rachael Lewis were all named to the all-tournament team.
Wake Forest returns to action next Sunday when they host Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
