WAKE FOREST TOPS SAN FRANCISCO AT NIKE/STANFORD INVITATIONAL

STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior Stefanie Mathews scored two goals in the second half to lead No. 18 Wake Forest to a 2-0 victory over San Francisco in the first round of the Nike/Stanford Invitational. Wake Forest improves to 6-1 on the season while San Francisco falls to 4-2.

Mathews broke a scoreless tie at 59:43 when she found the back of the net on an unassisted goal and then added an insurance goal at 66:39.

Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Klein earned her third shutout of the season by holding USF scoreless.

The Deacons return to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, when they face No. 11 Stanford in the tournament finale.
