NC STATE DOWNS NO. 14 WAKE FOREST, 1-0

RALEIGH, NC -- Stacey Hampton scored the game's only goal in the first half to lead NC State (7-6, 2-2 ACC) to a 1-0 victory over 14th-ranked Wake Forest (8-3-1, 1-3 ACC) Wednesday night.

Hampton broke free and scored an unassisted goal at the 14:54 mark, putting the ball inside the right post from 15 yards out.

Wake Forest outshot the Wolfpack, 12-7, and had several good scoring opportunities but could never get on the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Kat Mertz made five saves for NC State, while Beth Klein stopped four shots for the Deacons.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. when they host No. 10 Florida at Spry Stadium in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament second round game.
