Wake Forest and Georgia Play to a 2-2 Tie in Women's Soccer
ATHENS, GA - Stefanie Mathews and Christy Melby each scored a goal for 12th-ranked Wake Forest and Stephanie Yarem scored two goals for Georgia as the Demon Deacons and Bulldogs played to a 2-2 tie in women's soccer on Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ga.
Mathews got Wake Forest (8-2-1) on the scoreboard in the game's second minute when she stole the ball from a Georgia defender and scored.
Yarem answered for Georgia (9-2-1) just before halftime when she scored off a pass from Suzannah Weathersbee to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Both teams went scoreless for most of the second half, but Wake Forest took a 2-1 lead with five minutes remaining in the game when Melby found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. Georgia answered three minutes later when Weathersbee found Yarem again to tie the score at 2-2 with just two minutes reamining in regulation.
The two teams played 30 minuted of scoreless overtime and the game ended in a draw.
Wake Forest goalkeeper Beth Klein withstood a 38 shot attack by Georgia and made 11 saves for the Deacons.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to NC State for an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
