CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Wake Forest senior forward Anne Shropshire notched the game's only goal in the waning minutes of the first half as the No. 3-seeded Demon Deacons knocked off the No. 2-seeded Maryland Terrapins 1-0 in the semifinals of the ACC women's soccer tournament at Fetzer Field. The critical goal was set up when Emily Taggart controlled the ball on the right flank and sent a cross in front of the Maryland net to 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year Joline Charlton. Charlton tapped the ball to her left where an open Shropshire was waiting, and Shropshire did the rest, firing the ball to the back of the net for what proved to be the deciding score at the 43:53 mark. Wake Forest controlled the flow throughout the game, outshooting the Terrapins 14-6, including a 10-3 in the second half. Maryland goalkeepers Ali Wolff and Riki-Anne Serrins combined to make six saves, with Serrins keeping Maryland within striking distance in the second half with four key saves. The contest was hotly contested on the field, with the two teams combining for 33 fouls and five yellow cards. Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan was never really challenged, making just two saves as she cruised to her seventh shutout of the season. With the win, the Demon Deacons advance to the finals of the ACC Tournament to face the winner of the match between No. 1 seed North Carolina and No. 4 seed Clemson. The final will take place on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
