CARY, N.C. - Kristina Hanley scored the tying goal with 1:42 left in the second half, but Virginia's (12-5-2, 6-3-1 ACC) Sinead Farrelly scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 victory over Wake Forest (12-7-0, 5-5-0 ACC) on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Cavaliers controlled the game offensively, out shooting Wake Forest 23-7, and took 12 corner kicks, compared to five for the Demon Deacons. Junior goalkeeper Laura Morse stayed busy in goal, making a career-high 11 saves in the game. With the game tied at two in the second overtime, Virginia scored the game-winning goal with 5:44 left in the period. Sarah Senty played a pass ahead to Sinead Farrelly. Farrelly's shot from 10 yards out hit off the inside of the right post and went into the net to give the Cavaliers a victory. It appeared that the game would end in regulation with Virginia claiming a 2-1 victory. However, Hanley changed all that with one strike of the ball in the final two minutes of regulation. After the Deacons had four corner kicks in the span of 1:30, Allie Sadow played a pass into the box. The ball found the foot of Hanley from eight yards out. Hanley sent a bullet into the right side of the net to square the game at two and send the game into overtime. Wake Forest struck first in the 17th minute as Amy Smerdzinski connected on a long-range shot. Smerdzinski's shot from 22 yards out, snuck inside the left post to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead. The goal for Smerdzinski was her sixth of the season and marked the third straight game that she had found the back of the net.
Virginia continued to put the pressure on for the rest of the half, but were unable to score the equalizer. The Cavaliers finished the first half with 11 shots and seven corner kicks. The Cavaliers equalized with 41:51 left in the second half. Farrelly played a pass to Sarah Senty on the left side of the field. Senty sent what looked to be a cross toward the goal, but the shot found the right post and bounced into the goal to even the match at one. The goal for Senty was her first of the season. The Cavaliers took their first lead of the game with 14:50 left in the second half. Amanda Stewart sent a free kick from 20 yards outside the goal on the far right side of the 18-yard box. The cross found the head of Alli Fries, who got her header shot by Morse to give Virginia a 2-1 edge. Wake Forest will now await its NCAA Tournament fate is.
