Box Score

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team kept #2 North Carolina scoreless through the first half, but three second stanza goals gave the Tar Heels the 3-0 victory, Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons fall to 8-5-1 overall (2-4 ACC), while North Carolina improves to 13-0-1 (6-0 ACC).

Although the Tar Heels were able to get the first shot off just 40 seconds into the game, Wake Forest brought the ball into the UNC territory in the 18th minute, but an off-sides call kept the Deacs from finding a shot. Just minutes later, junior Sarah Kozey caught a small breakaway that opened up an opportunity firing the ball just high and right of the post. With eight minutes remaining in the half, the Deacs were able to create another opportunity as Kozey tossed a low cross to Jayme Liegh Cargnoni who knocked the ball just wide of the post.

In the second stanza, the Deacs again came out strong, keeping the Tar Heels away from the goal until the 54th minute when Lori Chalupny crossed the ball from the top corner of the box to the far post, where Heather O'Reilly finished it off. Despite the one goal deficit, Wake Forest continued to fight, bringing the ball back into North Carolina territory. A foul right outside the box created a free kick for the Deacs in the 61st minute . Taken by Melanie Schneider, the ball bounced high off the top rail, just missing the net.

In the 75th minute, North Carolina took the reigns of the game with a goal by Amy Stedmen off a corner. Just one minute later, the Tar Heels increased their lead to three with a goal by Chalupny that came from a cross by Elizabeth Guess. Outshooting the Deacs 3-0 for the remainder of the half, the clock ran out, leaving the final score, 3-0.

Freshman Heather Currie, played all 90 minutes for the Deacs between the rails and posted four saves on the Tar Heels 14 shots. In addition to Kozey, Schneider and Cargnoni; Maggie Horne, Kristen Kemp and Lindsey Jaco all found shots.

The Deacs will return to the field as they host Maryland in the final home match of the season, Saturday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. SCORING SUMMARY
