WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jill Hutchinson scored a pair of goals and Amanda Barasha recorded her third straight shutout in goal to lead No. 11 Wake Forest to a 3-0 win against fifth-ranked Florida State on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.

"I'm really ecstatic with our team's performance," head coach Tony da Luz said. "A performance like tonight shows what our team is capable of. Florida State is a good team. We were able to disrupt their attack and keep pressure on them. I'm extremely proud of our team for the performance tonight."

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 10-2-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Florida State drops to 10-2-0 and 3-1-0 in league action.

The victory marked the 199th in da Luz's head coaching career, bringing him one win away from 200. Da Luz's career record currently stands at 199-133-22, while his Wake Forest record is 154-92-20.

Each team had trouble generating any quality opportunities for most of the first half. However, Wake Forest was able to break through on Kaley Fountain's eighth goal of the year in the 42nd minute. The Deacs added two more goals in the second half as Hutchinson scored her ninth and 10th tallies of the season.

The Demon Deacons used a total team effort to shut down the ACC's top ranked offense. Entering the game, the Seminoles had scored a league-best 42 goals. However, Wake Forest was able to hold FSU to only nine shot attempts and shut out the Seminoles for just the second time in 2009.

"We did not want to be passive on defense tonight," da Luz continued. "I thought our back line was outstanding. Everyone from the goalkeeper all the way to the forwards defended extremely well tonight. It was a great team win."

Hutchinson recorded the fourth multi-goal game of her career and the third of the 2009 season. The Wayne, Pa., native leads the Deacs with 10 goals and 23 points on the season. Hutchinson now has 32 goals for her career, putting her in second in school history, two behind Sarah Kozey (2002-05).

Fountain found the back of the net for the eighth time in 2008 and also scored her third game-winning goal. The senior from Austin, Texas, is second on the squad with 20 points.

Barasha continued her stellar play in goal, recording her third consecutive shutout. The junior stopped all three Florida State shot attempts on goal and also made several nice plays on Seminole long throw-ins and set pieces.

"With Laura (Morse) out, Amanda (Barasha) has had to step up in goal," da Luz said. "She's been really thorough about her preparation for all the games. She has studied and watched video of each opponent. I'm really happy with the way she's played for us."

The Demon Deacons were able to out-shoot Florida State 11-9, including a slight 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wake and FSU each attempted three corner kicks.

Wake Forest had its first shot in the 13th minute when Bianca D'Agostino attempted a shot from 23 yards out that sailed high of the game. D'Agostino had another shot in the 15th minute that was saved by the Florida State goalkeeper.

Florida State had its first quality scoring chance in the 22nd minute. Jessica Price took a shot from 12 yards out on the left side of the box, but her attempt went right to Barasha, who was able to make the stop.

The Demon Deacons grabbed the lead with a goal in the 42nd minute. Ally Berry played a pass from the center of the field to Fountain on the left side of the 18-yard box. Fountain turned and shot from 17 yards out and snuck the ball inside the right post to make the score 1-0.

Florida State had a chance to equalize in the 55th minute. Tiffany McCarty took a shot from 17 yards out on the left side of the field that sailed just wide left of the net.

Wake Forest doubled its lead to 2-0 with Hutchinson's first goal in the 57th minute. Sadow played a thru ball down the middle of the field. The Florida State goalkeeper charged out, attempting to stop the ball before Hutchinson could get to it. However, Hutchinson won the race and got around the keeper and deposited her shot into the right side of the net to put the Deacs up by two.

The Demon Deacons continued to apply the pressure as Wake nearly added a third goal just three minutes later. Fountain chipped a ball from 35 yards out on the left side of the field that grazed off the cross bar. The rebound came right to D'Agostino in front of the goal, but her shot went high to keep the lead at 2-0.

Florida State found the woodwork in the 70th minute. McCarty's shot from eight yards out on the right side of the box hit off the right post and deflected in front of the goal. The Demon Deacon defense was alert and able to clear the ball away before Florida State could get another attempt.

Wake Forest closed out the scoring in the 77th minute on Hutchinson's second goal of the game. Jordan Feger played a cross the end line on the left side of the field. Her cross found Hutchinson, who played a one-touch shot into the net to make the score 3-0.

Erin McNulty suffered her second loss of the season in goal for the Seminoles, allowing three goals and making one save.

FSU was led offensively by Jessica Price, who attempted four shots, including two shots on frame. McCarty had two shot attempts for the Seminoles.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Thursday, October 15, as they travel to Raleigh to face the NC State Wolfpack. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
