Final Stats

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The 11th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated seventh-ranked Boston College in front of a hostile crowd of 842, Sunday, 2-1. The win marks number 100 for Tony da Luz as the Deacon's head coach. da Luz becomes just the fifth coach in ACC history to win 100 games at their current school.

The Deacons (7-3-1, 2-2 ACC) and Eagles (8-1-1, 2-1 ACC) played a scoreless first half. Deacon goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe made three saves in the first half.

In the second half, the Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when freshman Amy Smerdzinski took a shot on goal. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni redirected the ball into the net for her second goal of the year and second in three games. Smerdzinski notched her first assist on the season.

Boston College evened the score in the 82nd minute when Maddie Johnson scored. Johnson received a pass from Jenny Maurer off a free kick.

The Deacs scored the gamewinning goal with just 1:20 left in the match. Junior Lindsey Jaco netted a goal in the near right corner. Cargnoni dribbled the ball to the endline and crossed a pass into the box for her second assist of the season.

"It was a gutsy team performance," said da Luz. "We played very well in the first half and most of second half. We passed the ball very well. This win shows the team's character - the second game of the trip, against a very difficult top-10 team at their place. We were up 1-0 and give up goal late and to come back and score the gamewinner in regulation shows how much this team wanted to win this game."

da Luz's record at Wake Forest currently stands at 100-63-15. He joins North Carolina's Anson Dorrance (1987-present), Duke's Bill Hempen (1988-2000), Virginia's Lauren Gregg (1987-1995) and NC State's Larry Gross (1987-1993) as the only coaches to win 100 games at an ACC school. da Luz's overall record is 146-105-19.

The Deacons will next host NC State on Thursday, October 6. The match against the Wolfpack will kick off at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
