WINSTON-SALEM. N.C. - Elizabeth Remy scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the first overtime period, leading the Wake Forest women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over #3 Virginia. The win improves the Demon Deacons record to 7-3-1 overall, while the loss for North Carolina is the first of the season. Opening the game, the Deacs played evenly with the top-ranked opponents, trading possession of the ball through the half. Although Wake Forest did not get the first shot of the game off, the Deacs earned the first corner of the game, taken by sophomore Jayme Liegh Cargnoni, which resulted in two shots. The first, by Cargnoni, was knocked back out off the post and junior Melanie Schneider was able to find one of her, own that was saved by the Virginia keeper, Christina de Vries. With her kick, the ball was brought back into the Deacons territory and the Cavs were rewarded a corner kick of their own. During the remainder of the half, the two teams continued to share the ball, with Virginia finding five shots to the Deacons three. During the second stanza, both teams again shared the ball, until the 74th minute when the Virginia's Lindsay Gusak knocked the ball in off a corner kick taken by Shannon Foley. The Deacs, however, were undeterred as they answered back just 31 seconds later when Remy took a shot at the top of the box that ricocheted off of the cross bar. Sarah Kozey, who was in front of the goal, capitalized on the free ball and finished it off to tie the score at one all, bringing the game into overtime. The goal for Kozey marks her ninth of the season. Going into the overtime period, the game was once again close between the two teams until the ball found its way down into the Cavaliers territory. Kozey, in possession, played the ball through the defense into the box, where Remy was able to knock it in, giving Wake Forest the victory. The goal for Remy is her third of the season, while the assist for Kozey is her third.
Remy led the Deacs with three shots and the game-winning goal, while Kozey contributed two. For the Cavaliers, Gusak and Sarah Huffman contributed six of the 12 total shots. In goal, Heather Currie notched six saves for the Deacs, while Vries had four. As a team, Wake Forest had nine fouls to Virginia's six. The Deacons will return to the field, Friday, Oct. 8 in Tallahassee, Fla. as they face the Florida State. Against the Seminoles, Wake Forest leads the series 7-2-2 despite the last meeting between the two teams resulting in a 1-2 loss for the Deacs on Nov. 5, 2003.
