Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest freshman Sarah Winslow scored her third goal in as many games as the No. 9 Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated Virginia Tech, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium. The win is the first ACC victory of the season for the Demon Deacons and improves them to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Playing the majority of the game in a steady downpour, Winslow scored the game-winner for the Deacs off a breakaway 36 minutes in the contest. She brought the ball down side of the field, and took advantage of the weather, putting it into the net as Hokie goalkeeper Mallory Soldner slid on the wet field. On the season, the Wilson, N.C. native has four goals.

The Hokies and the Demon Deacon traded shots through the remainder of the first half, but neither team was able to find the net. Wake Forest had one opportunity that was close, as freshman Jill Hutchinson took a shot on the far corner that was saved by a diving Solder who prevented goal with her feet.

The rain let up slightly in the second half, and both teams took advantage of improved conditions. The Demon Deacons increased its lead by one more when senior Elizabeth Remy sent a long cross to Amy Smerdzinski, who was waiting on the far side of the box. The goal for Smerdzinski is her third of the season and assist is the second for Remy.

Wake Forest earned another goal in the 60th minute off an own goal from Virginia Tech. Hutchinson set it up as she took the ball down the field, causing Soldner to come out of the box. A shot from Hutchinson was deflected into the net by a Hokie defender for the score. Twenty minutes later the Demon Deacons had similar luck, as Virginia Tech's only goal of the day came from the foot of a Wake Forest defender.

The two teams each took 11 shots on the day, while Wake Forest took five corners to the Hokies two. Freshman netminder Laura Morse earned six saves on the day, while Soldner earned two in 69 minutes of action. Ashley Owens played the final 21 minutes for Virginia Tech and registered no saves.

Wake Forest will return to action in Spry Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 28 as the Demon Deacons host Maryland. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
