Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Sarah Kozey scored her 23rd career goal, moving to fourth on the Wake Forest goals list, but it wasn't enough as the Demon Deacons women's soccer team fell to Virginia Tech, 3-2, in the first conference game of the season. The Deacs drop to 6-2-1 overall, while the Hokies improve to 6-2.

The Deacs started out strong as Kozey launched the ball into the back of the cage at the far post after receiving a cross from freshman Maggie Horne. The assist for Horne is her first of the season, while the goal for Kozey is her eighth. Kozey currently is tied for second in the ACC for the most goals scored.

After the goal for the Deacs, Virginia Tech was quick to answer back, with a goal by Ashley Stoutland, that came from a pass in front of the box in the 36th minute. Holding onto possession, the Hokies kept the ball and were able to gain three straight corner kicks in the final minutes of the half. In the last two seconds, a long shot from midfield by Heather Hallberg made it past Deacon keeper, Heather Currie, putting Virginia Tech up, 2-1.

In the second stanza, the Deacs came out strong in the first minutes, with Elizabeth Remy finding a shot that was saved. With the transition into the Deacs half and a cross from Shannon Poach, Hallberg again put the ball past Currie, raising the score, 3-1. Fighting back, Kozey, Melanie Schneider and Taylor Toombs were all able to find shots in the subsequent minutes, all of which were saved by Mallory Soldner, the Hokie netminder. Holding onto possession of the ball, the Deacs were awarded a corner kick in the 88th minute taken by sophomore Tracie Abbott that was launched to Lindsey Jaco who headed it back to Schneider who finished it off, leaving the final score at 3-2.

In the cage for Wake Forest, Currie faced 10 shots and registered three saves, while Soldner found eight saves on the Deacs 16 shots. Schneider and Remy both were able to get off four shots, while Kozey found three.

The Deacs will return to action against Duke on Sunday night at Spry Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
