Sept. 12, 1999 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - UCLA forward Staci Duncan's second-half goal lifted the Bruins past 25th-ranked Wake Forest, 1-0, in the championship game of the Wake Forest Nike Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. In the day's earlier game, Oregon defeated UNC Charlotte by a score of 2-1 to take third place in the tournament. After a scoreless first half between the Bruins and the Demon Deacons, Duncan chipped in a shot from 15 yards out over the head of Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan to put UCLA on the scoreboard at the 60:08 mark. Regan, however, was fantastic in the game as she kept the Demon Deacons alive with a career-high 10 saves. UCLA outshot Wake Forest, 16-10, in the game, although both teams had numerous scoring opportunities. The Deacs' best chance to score came in the game's 38th minute when a cross from Rachael Lewis was chipped onto goal by Lindesy Griffin, but was barely deflected over the net by Bruin goalkeeper Lindsey Culp. In the earlier game, Oregon took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Chalise Baysa headed in a ball at the 29:50 mark. The Ducks stretched the lead to 2-0 at 75:33 when Alyssa White scored from 15 yards out off a pass from Beth Bowler. UNC Charlotte made a late charge with a goal in the 87th minute from Jill Currie, but the Oregon defense held on for the 2-1 victory.
