Sept. 10, 2004 WINSTON-SALEM. N.C. - A first half goal by sophomore Elizabeth Remy wasn't enough as the Wake Forest women's soccer team fell to Colorado, 2-1, in the first game of the Wake Forest/adidas Women's Soccer Classic. The loss marks the first of the season for the team, moving the Demon Deacons to 3-1-1 on the season. As the game started, the Deacs and the Buffaloes were close, both finding shots early in the game, but keeping the match scoreless. At the 35 minute mark, Colorado's Ashlie Mihalcin was able to capitalize off a corner kick, putting the ball behind Ruth Ann Supica with a header, putting the Buffaloes ahead by one. After the Buffaloes were on the board, the Deacs quickly fought back, bringing the ball into Colorado's side with six minutes left in the half. Senior Alli Hunt retrieved the ball after a short clear by the Buffalo defense and fed it to Remy, who slipped it past the keeper, tying the score at 1-1. As the second period of play began, the Deacs and the Buffaloes continued to share possession, running the game up and down the field. In the 74th minute, Colorado was granted the first corner of the half, where the Deacs accidentally tapped the ball through the rails in the attempt to clear it, putting Colorado ahead, 2-1. Fighting back in the remaining minutes, the Deacs did not give up, taking four shots in the final five and controlling possession for the remainder of the game. Remy, who led the Deacs with five shots on the net, was followed closely by Melanie Schneider, who posted four of her own, helping Wake Forest to out-shoot its opponents, 17 to 10. Playing all 90 minutes of the game for the Deacs, Supica netted two saves to the seven from Colorado's Jessica Keller. The Deacs will return to action Sunday for the second day of the Wake Forest/adidas Women's Soccer Classic against Denver at 2 p.m.
