Sept. 5, 1999 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Wake Forest freshman Liz McDowell scored with just 4:21 remaining in regulation to give 23rd-ranked Wake Forest a 2-1 victory over host Air Force in the final round of the Falcon Women's Soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colo. With the victory Wake Forest improved to 3-0 on the year and the Demon Deacons captured the tournament title with a perfect 2-0 record. Air Force dropped to 0-2. The Demon Deacons jumped on the scoreboard first at the 19:50 mark in the first half when junior Christie Melby scored off a pass from freshman Lindsey Griffin. The Falcons answered in the game's 40th minute when Kari James chipped a pass from Evelyn Calley into the top part of the net. The game remained tied until the 85th minute when McDowell stole the ball in the box and took a shot into the far corner of the net for the game-winning goal. Air Force goalkeeper Kristy Kuhlman made 10 saves to keep the Falcons in the game while Wake Forest keeper Erin Regan made one save to lead the Deacs' to the win. Wake Forest, which controlled much of the game, outshot Air Force, 13-3, and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Wake Forest senior forward Anne Shropshire was named the tournament's offensive MVP. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Friday when they host the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational at Spry Stadium.
