Aug. 31, 2008 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sarah Winslow scored three goals to lead the No. 15 Wake Forest women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over UNC-Wilmington on a hot Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. The Deacons improve to 3-0 on the season, while UNC-Wilmington drops to 1-2-1. "We didn't have a great start today," head coach Tony da Luz said. "In the first 10 minutes, we could have easily been down 2-0. We came back and scored some very good goals. I'm happy with how we played overall." Outside of the first 10 minutes of the game, Wake Forest controlled much of the action. The Deacons out-shot UNC-Wilmington 21-15, and had an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal. After not scoring in Wake's first two games of the year, Winslow was the goal-scoring star against UNC-Wilmington, scoring three times and registering the first hat trick of her collegiate career. Winslow also netted three goals in Wake Forest's exhibition victory over Appalachian State. "Sarah always seems to be in the right place at the right time," da Luz said. "On the first goal, (Amanda) Lebo did all the work and pulled the keeper out and made a beautiful pass to Sarah. On the second goal, Kaley (Fountain) dribbled around everyone and put the ball at Sarah's foot. Sarah's the most likely player on our team to score that third goal because she always puts pressure on the opponent." The Deacons scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute, as Jill Hutchinson tallied her second game-winning goal of the weekend and third goal of the year. Hutchinson fired a shot off the Seahawk goalkeeper. The ball went high into the air and landed just past the goal line to put Wake Forest on top. Fountain notched the assist on the play. Wake extended its lead to 2-0 at the 31:39 mark as Winslow scored her first goal of the game. Amanda Lebo played a cross that found Winslow on the right side of the box. Winslow's shot from five yards out found the back of an open net. Hutchinson was credited with the second assist on the play.
Allie Sadow scored her third goal of the season in the 53rd minute to give the Deacs a 3-0 lead. Sadow unleashed a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off the keeper and rolled into the net. Camelyn Dillon and Eleanor Davidson made the assists on the play. Winslow scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute. Fountain dribbled around several defenders and sent a cross into the box that found Winslow seven yards out. Winslow did the rest, scoring for the second time. Wake Forest got its final goal of the game at the 78:28 mark. The UNCW goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball from 20 yards out. Winslow jumped and the ball deflected off of Winslow and went directly into the net to give the junior forward a hat trick. "Everyone always says to put pressure on the ball," Winslow said. "I just ran as hard as I could and got lucky." The Deacons recorded their second straight shutout. Amanda Barasha, who picked up her third win of the season, played the first 70 minutes of the contest, making three saves. Junior Laura Morse played the final 20 minutes and made four saves. Wake Forest returns to the field on Friday, traveling to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hawthorne Suites Hokie Invitational. The Deacons face George Washington at 3:30 p.m. on Friday before battling Texas A&M on Sunday at 11 a.m. -WakeForestSports.com- |
