WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey announced Thursday morning that a pair of prospective student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Wake Forest women's golf team next fall. Michelle Shin (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Stephanie Kim (Orlando, Fla.) have both signed commitments to join the No. 7 Wake Forest women's golf team beginning in the fall of 2009. "We're real excited to have both Stephanie and Michelle coming in this fall," said Dailey. "It could be one of our strongest recruiting classes ever. Both players have proven themselves to be competitive players on a national scale." Shin is from The Canterbury School in Fort Myers, Fla., and is regarded as Southwest Florida's most-accomplished high school golfer since two-time state champion and eventual LPGA Tour member Catherine Cartwright in 2000. Shin was named the Fort Myers News-Press All-Area Girls Golfer of the Year three times prior to her senior season, and competed in nine United States Golf Association national championships, reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Girls' Junior and U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in 2007 and the quarterfinals of the Publinx this year. Ranked as high as 13th in the country in the Polo Golf junior golf rankings early this summer, Shin also qualified for the state high school tournament four times, with her best result a second-place finish last month in Lakeland, Fla. Shin won the American Junior Golf Association's First American Title Jr. Classic in both 2005 and 2007 and carded a sizzling final round 61 to win the event in `05. She also posted a pair of runner-up finishes in AJGA events last season. "Michelle finished in the semifinals of the U.S. Juniors a couple of years ago and played very well in the Publinx this year. She has proved herself as a very good competitor and she has been one of the top junior golfers in the country over the past few years." Stephanie Kim is from Orlando, Fla., and attends the Crenshaw School. She is currently ranked No. 20 by the Polo Junior Golf Rankings and is regarded as the No. 8 recruit in the 2009 class.
Kim played well in a number of AJGA events over the past two seasons and earned second team Rolex Junior All-American honors this past summer. In this past summer's U.S. Girl's Junior, Kim finished stroke-play qualifying as the No. 2 seed after rounds of 68-70 and advanced to the quarterfinals of match play before falling to the eventual champion Alexis Thompson. Last week, Kim cruised to a five-shot victory at the LPGA International on the Florida Junior Tour, carding the only even-par round of the tournament in the final round. In 2007, Kim won four straight tournaments, including a win at the prestigious Golfweek Invitational. She also posted five rounds in the 60s during that stretch. Kim has qualified to play on the DURAMED Futures Tour as an amateur each of the last two years, including finishing tied for 32nd in the over 300-player field last week. "Stephanie has also proven herself well not only in junior events but in amateur events as well," Dailey said. "She's played well on the Futures Tour and has also done well in junior events." "We're real excited to have both Michelle and Stephanie here and I know they'll both be good additions to our team and I know they're both excited about coming." - WakeForstSports.com - |
