WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team is eager to get back to action this weekend at the UNC Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C. The first round is set for Friday with the 54-hole tournament wrapping up on Sunday. After a disappointing showing last weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship, the Deacons have had a solid week of practice and are poised for a solid weekend. "Last week was just an off week for us," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "We learned from what we did wrong and had a good week of preparation for this weekend and I think the students are ready to go. How we played last week was no indication of how good this team can be. We have the talent and they are close to breaking through." If the Deacs are going to get on track this weekend, it will have to come against another strong field. Twelve of the 18 teams participating this weekend are either ranked or are receiving votes in the latest Golf World/NGCA coaches poll. "We are playing against another strong field again this weekend," said Dailey. "I think last week's field at the Mason Rudolph may have been the toughest we'll see all year but there are also some really good teams this weekend too." The Wake lineup will consist of seniors Nannette Hill and Jean Chua, junior Dolores White, sophomore Natalie Sheary and freshman Cheyenne Woods. Last week, Sheary carded her first under par round of the season in the opening round and wound up finishing tied for 31st. Sheary also played well at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational last season, carding a pair of 1-under 71s on her way to a tie for 5th. This will be Hill's third and Chua's second time playing the Lady Tar Heel. Hill finished tied for 28th in her previous two outings, including posting a 3-under 69 in the final round in 2006. Both Hill and Chua are coming off final round 74s at the Mason Rudolph and are looking for a good results in their last time at Chapel Hill.
White played in the Lady Tar Heel as a freshman in 2006, finishing tied for 18th after a final round 73. She has played in one tournament so far this season, finishing tied for 47th at the NCAA Fall Preview. Woods is looking to put a tough weekend at the Mason Rudolph behind her and get back to the form that allowed her to lead the team at the NCAA Preview. She finished tied for 26th at Caves Valley after rounds of 75-76-74. Wake Forest will tee off in the final wave Friday morning with Auburn and Virginia beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tee times begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the final round getting under way with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. The forecast looks ideal for the weekend, with temperatures around 80 degrees and no sign of rain. Fans can follow all three rounds on Golfstat's Live Scoring with results and recaps of each day posted on WakeForestSports.com. The Deacons will have almost three weeks off before wrapping up the fall portion of the schedule at the Landfall Tradition on Oct. 24-26. Wake won the Landfall last season by nine shots and Hill snagged her first career individual title. |
