Wake Forest Prepares For ACC Tournament

Wake Forest will participate in the 10th Annual ACC Tournament at the Grandover East Course in Greensboro, NC, April 17-19. The Deacons have finished second in the four team event the last two seasons.

This will be the second time in three seasons that the tournament has been held at Grandover. The tournament was played at the course in 1996 with the Deacons finishing second to Duke.

Wake's 899 team total in the 1996 championship tied the school record for lowest 54-hole score in the ACC Tournament.

Armas Leads Young Team Into Conference Championship

Senior Alexandra Armas, junior Kristen Wagner, and sophomore Kelly Kirwin are the only members of the 1998 Wake Forest women's golf team with ACC Tournament experience. The three will be among the five players Wake Forest will have at the ACC Tournament.

Armas has played in three ACC Tournaments. She withdrew from the 1995 tournament, but finished ninth at Grandover in 1996. Last season, Wagner posted the best finish among the three golfers as she placed 10th. Armas placed 15th while Kirwin was 17th.

The other two players Wake will use in the tournament are sophomore Kerri Murphy and freshman Marta Prieto.

Wake Forest Owns Three ACC Titles

Wake Forest will be looking to win its fourth ACC Championship this weekend in Greensboro. The Deacons claimed their first title in 1986 under the leadership of coach Mary Beth McGirr.

Dianne Dailey coached teams won the tournament in 1994 and 1995.

Deacs Look For Sixth Consecutive NCAA Championship Bid

In 1993, Wake Forest made its first NCAA Championship appearance and have returned to the event every year since. The Deacs have finished no worse than 11th during that span. Wake Forest had an 11th place finish last season as well as in 1996.

Wake Forest Has Produced At Least One All-American Every Season Since 1992

Since 1992, Wake Forest has produced at least one All-American every season. The latest was Laura Philo, who in 1997 was named All-American for the second consecutive year. Current Deacon, Alexandra Armas, was a freshman All-American in 1995. That season Wake had two All-Americans as Stephanie Neill made the team for the fourth straight time.

Head Coach Dianne Dailey In 10th Season

Dianne Dailey is in her 10th season as the head coach of the women's golf team. She also serves the university as the athletic department's senior women's administrator.

During her 10 seasons, Wake has won 17 tournament titles. Included in those 17 are two ACC Championships and two NCAA East Regional Championships.

The Deacs have finished among the top-3 in 40 tournaments and produced four players who combined have been All-Americans eight times.

Armas Looking To The Return Of Her "Sweet Stroke"

During the fall of 1997, senior Alexandra Armas did something no other golfer on record has done at Wake Forest. She went the entire fall (12 rounds) without posting a score above 75.

In the spring it took her nine rounds before she recorded a round under 75. Armas is looking to get back to form as she enters the ACC Tournament.
