The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team shot a 302 (+18) Tuesday in the second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional in Palos Verdes, Calif. to rise into sole possession of sixth place. "The course again played hard. If we could eliminate some of our course management mistakes, we could be right there," Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey said. The Deacs were led by freshman Natalie Sheary for the second consecutive day. Sheary finished at even Tuesday, shooting a 71. She came into the round at one under par. Sheary's first individual victory as a Demon Deacon is in reach as she trails Pepperdine's Taylore Karle (-1) by two strokes for the individual medal. "If Natalie didn't have two three-putts, she would be in the lead," Dailey said. "She could definitely go out and win the tournament. She's very confident, focused and she's right where you want to be heading into the final round." Junior Jean Chua and senior Laura Crawford each shot 76 Tuesday as they finished at five over par. Crawford bettered her first round score by two strokes. Out of the 15 participating teams, none are even or under par heading into Wednesday's final round. First-place Southern Cal (+18) leads second-place UCLA by one stroke and third-place Florida by three. Freshman Allie Bodemann recorded a 79 (+8) and senior Jordan Craig posted an 85 (+14) to finish the scoring for the Deacs. Wake has posted a total score of 603 for the first two rounds. "If we just had bogeys on the holes we double bogeyed, we would have been seven shots better today than yesterday's round," Coach Dailey said. "Who knows? Anything can happen." The wind picked-up off the southern pacific coast Tuesday as temperatures dropped into the 50s. Coach Dailey said the wind was "definitely a factor." Weather.com is projecting mid-50s temperatures when the Deacs are set to tee-off for the final round at 8:15 a.m. pacific time.
