CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Nannette Hill and sophomore Natalie Sheary both carded rounds of 1-under 71 to lead the Wake Forest women's golf team in the opening round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Club. The Demon Deacons carded a 294 and are tied with Virginia for first after Friday's round. The 294 is the lowest round of the season thus far for the Deacs. Both Sheary and Hill rounds of 71 have them in a five-way tie for first after the opening round. "Overall, this was a much better start," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey referring to her team's slow start in the first two tournaments. "The players stuck to their game plan well today and we posted a good number." This was the second 71 of the season for Sheary who also posted the same number in the first round of the Mason Rudolph last weekend. Her round featured three birdies and she could have easily have had more. "Natalie played really well from tee to green today," said Dailey. "She was hitting it close all day and missed three or four putts inside of five feet or her round could have been ever better." Hill also posted three birdies in the first round and a double bogie on ten was her only blemish. "Nannette hung in there real well today." Dailey said. "She made a double on ten but rebounded with back-to-back birdies a couple of holes later which really helped us." The 1-under was the first under par round of the season for Hill. Senior Jean Chua carded 16 pars in the opening round on her way to a 1-over 73. She doubled the par-3 fifth but bounced back with a birdie on seven and would finish the round with 11 straight pars. Chua will start the second round tied for tenth. Junior Dolores White and freshman Cheyenne Woods each posted opening round 79s and will start Saturday in a tie for 49th. Host North Carolina carded an opening round 299 and Louisville and Texas A&M were right behind them with a 301. "We don't need to get too far ahead of ourselves tomorrow but if we can come out and play smart and post five rounds under 75, I think we'll be right where we need to be," Dailey commented. The Deacons will start the second round at 10:30 Saturday morning. Both of the final two rounds can be followed live at Golfstat.com.
