Sept. 26, 2008 FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Sophomore Natalie Sheary carded her first under-par round of the season Friday with a 1-under 71 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt. Sheary's round featured three birdies and an eagle, which came at the par-5 18th. She posted a two-under 34 on the back nine, her first nine of the day and made two birdies and three bogies in the middle of her front nine to card a 37. She finished in an 11-way tie for sixth place. "Natalie played very good today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "She made an eagle on her ninth hole and as well as she played, she had three three-putts so it could have been even better." Paced by Sheary's round, the Deacons shot a 300 (+12) in the opening round and are in 12th place with two rounds to play. At the turn, the Deacs were just 1-over and as high as fourth place but a rough second nine made dinner taste a little sour. "Today was very frustrating," said Dailey. "We started so well on our first nine but we gave it all away on the back. That was the most big numbers we have had in one round in a long time. However, it wasn't a total struggle. The low scores are there. This team is ready for a breakout round and if we can eliminate the big numbers, we'll be right there." Freshman Cheyenne Woods continued her solid play early on with a 3-over 75. She birdied her first hole of the day and was 1-under through her first six holes. However, she would then double-bogie 17 and post eight straight pars before a double on eight gave her a 38 coming in. She will start the second round tied for 40th. Seniors Nannette Hill, Jean Chua and sophomore Allie Bodemann all carded matching 77s in the first round. Chua birdied her first and last holes of the day but a pair of triple bogies were sandwiched in between. She had a total of four birdies on the day, which was tied for the most on the team with Bodemann. Bodemann carded a 2-over 38 on her opening nine but made back-to-back birdies on holes 1 and 2 to get back to even par. However, a triple on five and a double bogie to finish deflated her round. Hill carded nines of 38-39 for her 77. She had a pair of birdies on the day, both on par fives. All three players are currently tied for 52nd. US Women's Amateur champion Amanda Blumenhurst carded five birdies and is tied with Auburn's Candace Schepperle atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under. Oklahoma State had three different players shoot 1-under 71, giving OSU a one-shot lead over UCLA at 2-under, 286. The second round is set for Saturday morning.
