DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team slipped from fourth to seventh place after carding a team score of 15-over 307 in the second round of play at the NCAA East Regional on Friday at the Duke Golf Club. With a two-round total of 606, or 22-over-par, the Demon Deacons are 21 strokes behind team leader Georgia. The Deacs narrowly maintained their position in the top eight, with eighth-place UNC and ninth-place Auburn close behind. Only the top eight teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Senior Alexandra Armas had another outstanding day, carding a 1-under 72 in the second round to jump to third place in the individual standings. With a two-day total of 145, or 1-under-par, Armas is just three strokes off the individual leader, Georgia's Julia Boros. The rest of the Deacon lineup struggled in the second round, with no player carding lower than a 78. Freshman Marta Prieto, the 1998 ACC Individual Champion, tallied a 78 and stands in 33rd place overall at 7-over. Junior Kristen Wagner, who shot an 81, and sophomores Kelly Kirwin, who tallied 78, both stand tied for 47th place at 9-over. Sophomore Kerri Murphy (79) is tied for 67th place at 11-over.
