BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team is in eighth place after 18 holes of play at the 1999 Lady Gamecock Classic. The 54-hole event is being contested at the 5,996-yard, par-72, University Club in Blythewood, SC. The Demon Deacons recorded a team round of 28-over-par, 316, over the first 18 holes of play and trail team leader Duke by 29 strokes. The top-ranked Blue Devils scorched the course for a team round of 1-under-par 287 and lead second-place South Carolina by 13 shots. Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn fired an opening round of 6-under-par, 32-34=66 to lead the individual event by seven shots. That score, is the best under-par score for a female in the history of the course and tournament. It is also tied with four other players for the lowest round in the nation this season. The Deacon individuals in the field are led by senior Kristen Wagner (Martinsville, IN), who carded a 40-38=78 on the opening day and is one of four players in 30th place. Following Wagner in the individual standings are Kelly Kirwin (Grand Rapids, MN) at 39-40=79 and sophomore Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) at 40-39=79, both of whom are part of an eight-player logjam in 34th place. Freshman Nicole Faniola (Old Lyme, CT) is the next WFU competitor in the field as she shot an 40-40=80 in the first round to stand among six players tied for 42nd place. The final Demon Deacon player in the field, freshman Katie Brenny (Little Falls, MN) withdrew from the event in the opening round today. The Lady Gamecock Classic continues tomorrow and Sunday with the second and third rounds of play. FINAL TEAM STANDINGS
