The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team and defending ACC Tournament Champion is set to begin the ACC Championship. The Demon Deacons, who earned the third seed in the tournament, will face sixth-seeded Duke at 4 p.m. in the second game of the opening day on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
With a win on Thursday, the Deacs would face second-seeded Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. The Championship game is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game one of the ACC Championship, played at 1 p.m., will pit Boston College, the four seed, against fifth-seeded Virginia. During the regular season, both teams posted 1-4 records in league play, and could be separated for seeding purposes only by goal differential in conference games.
Wake Forest (12-4, 3-2 ACC) has won the conference crown on three occasions, including last year's most recent title. The Demon Deacons captured their first ACC Championship in 2002, the same year they won their first of three straight National Titles. The Deacs also won both the tournament title and National title the following year in 2003.
About Duke
The Duke Blue Devils, ranked 12th in this week's national poll, closed out the regular season with an overall record of 11-7 (1-4 ACC) and was part of a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference and received the sixth seed. Junior midfielder Marian Dickinson led the team in points with 34, including 13 goals and 8 assists, while sophmore forward Amie Survilla notched 11 goals on the season.
Series Vs. Duke
Duke leads the all-time series against Wake Forest 39-22, but the Deacs hold a 7-3 advantage in the last 10 meetings. Wake Forest defeated Duke 4-2 early this season. The last time the two programs met in the ACC Tournament was in 2003 when Wake defeated the Blue Devils 3-2 in overtime to capture their second straight conference crown.
Last Time Out...
The Demon Deacons closed out conference play on Sunday, Oct. 28 with a 3-2 victory over Boston College to finish the season with a 3-2 ACC record, placing third behind North Carolina and Maryland in the conference standings.
Wake Lands Three on All-ACC Team
Juniors Minou Gimbrere and Michelle Kasold and sophomore Aileen Davis were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, announced by the conference office Wednesday. Kasold earns All-ACC accolades for the second straight season, while Davis and Gimbrere earn the honor for the first time in their career. At least one Demon Deacon has earned All-ACC honors 10 consecutive seasons.
