Former Deacs Help USA Field Hockey Qualify for Olympics

April 28, 2008

KAZAN, Russia - Former Wake Forest Field Hockey athletes Kelly Doton and Lauren Crandall helped the U.S. Field Hockey team earn its first bid to the Olympics since 1988 with a 3-1 win over Belgium on Sunday.

Kelly Doton, who finished her career at Wake Forest in 2003, had the first assist of the game. Lauren Crandall, a 2007 WFU graduate, provided support from the midfield during the U.S. win.

"We are ecstatic to say the least," Wake Forest head coach Jen Averill said. "That team has worked tremendously hard and all of us here in the states are extremely proud of them."

Field Hockey play in the Olympic Games will begin on August 8 and run through the 24. For more information and a complete U.S./Belgium recap, please visit The International Hockey Federation website.
