WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest Field Hockey team has announced its list of 2008 signees, which features eight talented athletes from coast to coast and beyond.

"We are thrilled to announce the freshman class of 08-09. To say thrilled is actually an understatement. We feel that this years' class will certainly prove to be one of the most outstanding groups of individuals to have ever represented Wake Forest," Head Coach Jen Averill said.

"The talent will speak for itself but what we have been and are still most impressed by is the character by which these individuals conduct themselves. Their vision, desire, leadership potential and genuine personality shall have a profound impact upon all of us."

Cristen Atchison
5-8 - Midfield/Back
Frank W. Cox HS- Virginia Beach

As co-captain of Frank W. Cox High School varsity team, Atchison helped lead her team to their second consecutive State AAA title in 2007. Atchison is a three-year participant in the National Futures Tournament and has been identified as Futures Elite athlete in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

"Cristen has proven over the last year that she has what it takes to be extremely successful at the next level. Her physical strength, desire, coach able attitude and leadership qualities make her a positive asset to our program," Averill said.

Faith Adams
5-7 - Midfield/Forward
Great Falls, Va. - Langley HS

In 2007 Adams served as captain of the Langley High School field hockey team and guided the Saxons through an undefeated regular season where she tallied 13 goals and 15 assists. Adams picked up back-to-back First Team All-State honors and was named the North Region AAA Player of the Year for 2006 and 2007. The Virginia native also captained the U-19 Capitol Pegasus and took sixth place overall at the 2007 National Field Hockey Futures Championship with Team Richmond.

"Faith is an all around solid hockey player with unlimited potential," Averill said. "She continues to impress us with her creative style of play and work ethic. Faith will be a great addition to our squad and institution."

 

 

Dara Downs
5-1 - Forward
Fairfax, Va. - Robinson Secondary School

Downs served as the 2007 team captain at Robinson Secondary School, where she led the team with 16 goals and six assists. She capped off the season with First Team All-District Fairfax County and Second Team All-Region Northern honors. Since 2006, Downs has been a USFHA Region 8 Futures Participant and earned a place in the U-16 National Futures Tournament in 2006.

"Dara is a very focused and determined young athlete," Averill said. "Her quick, aggressive style of play makes her a threat both offensively and defensively. We look forward to watching her develop at this next level."

Kerry Ergen
5-5 - Forward
Colorado Academy - Littleton, CO.

In 2007, Ergen's earned First Team All-State honors and recognition as her MVP at Colorado Academy, where the team finished the season as state runner-up for the third consecutive season.

"Kerry has excellent vision and understanding of the game. She has proved to be a solid distributor for her teams at the midfield position," Averill said. "Her athleticism and speed will be great assets to an already quick and aggressive front line at Wake. We will look to utilize her strengths for us up front."

Lauren Greenwald
5-1 - Midfield
La Costa Canyon HS - Carlsbad, Calif.

Greenwald has played with the U.S. National U-16 Team and will join the U-19 team this summer in the US Field Hockey Futures Elite Japan Tour. In 2007 Greenwald earned the Union Tribune Player of the Year Award and the North County Times Player of the Year Award for her work as captain at La Costa Canyon H.S.

"Lauren is one of the best young skilled players I have seen in years. Her vision and distribution are incredibly advanced for such a young player," Averill said. "She is extremely unselfish and we look forward to having her be a part of our great class."

Adelaide Knott
5-3 - Forward
The Hill School -Perthshire, Scotland

Knott is a Hill School MVP for 2007 for her leadership in guiding the squad to the 2007 Maple League Championship. Previously, Knott spent three years with the Millfield 1st XI, where the team earned runner up positions in the National Championships.

"Addie is an incredibly gifted young player. Her vision, distribution and overall skills will have an immediate impact upon our program," Averill said. "We are thrilled to have Adelaide bring another exceptional dimension of hockey to our program."

Kaitlin Poisa
5-5 - Back
Lehighton Area HS - Lehighton, Pa.

Poisa is a National Field Hockey Coaches Association of American All-American who has been a tri-captain at Lehighton Area High School for the 2006 and 2007 season. In 2007, Poisa picked up All-State Honors and received her second consecutive team MVP award.

"Kaitlin has an incredible work ethic combined with a huge desire to learn and grow. Her strengths include but are not limited to speed, strength, agility and effort. We will look to utilize all of her strengths at mid and or in the back field," Averill said.

Julia Young
5-6 - Goalkeeper
Woodrow Wilson HS - Washington, DC.

Young is a six year member of the Futures program at Maryland University, earning Futures Elite recognition in 2005 and 2007. Young was junior Olympic gold medalist in 2006 and played with the Capitol Pegasus U-16 and U-19 squads from 2004-2007.

"Julia is a versatile, aggressive goalkeeper who will add depth in our backfield. Her organizational skills coupled with her communication style make her an invaluable part of the defense. We are excited to have such a positive and hard working player join our program," Averill said.
