Wake Forest Edged by William & Mary, 1-0
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Amy Vesci scored with 16:18 remaining in the game to lift William & Mary over visiting Wake Forest, 1-0, at Busch Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss is the third straight for the Demon Deacons (6-4) since earning a No. 11 ranking in last week's NCAA poll.
Wake played 20 minutes of the second half with just 10 players, after junior Kelly Simon was issued a yellow card for dangerous play. Vesci scored the game-winner while the Deacons were short-handed, winning a loose ball off a delected shot and putting it past Wake goalie Jaime Tressler. The Deacs outshot the Tribe (2-4) by a 12-7 margin and held an 8-6 edge in corners. Tribe goalie Bridget Gavaghan made six stops in net.
Wake Forest travels to Maryland next Saturday, Sept. 27, for a 1 p.m. game.
