Field Hockey Tops American, 6-2

Serluco Nets Hat-Trick on Penalty Strokes

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior back Nicole Serluco scored three goals, all on penalty strokes, and added an assist as Wake Forest defeated visiting American, 6-2, at Kentner Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win was the fifth straight for the Demon Deacons (5-1).

Serluco converted her first penalty stroke just 4:41 into the game to give Wake a 1-0 lead, but Sage Asteak answered for American less than two minutes later to tie the score. Kelly Simon scored off a rebound to put Wake back in front, and Serluco put her second stroke high to the goalie's stick side for a 3-1 lead.

American (1-3) closed the gap to 3-2 on a Virginia Casabo goal just before the half, but the Deacs used a three-goal run in the second half to seal the win. Jenny Everett scored two goals and Serluco converted a third stroke, all in a span of 2:35, to put the game away for Wake.

The Deacons outshot American 29-9 and held a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Meaghan Nitka and Jaime Tressler combined for six saves in goal for the Deacs, while Stacy Thomas made 17 stops for the Eagles in net.

Wake hosts Virginia Comonwealth tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1:00 pm.
