Wake Falls to Duke in Acc Tournament
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Mandy Schott scored the game-winning goal with just over 12 minutes remaining as fourth-seeded Duke held off fifth-seeded Wake Forest, 3-2, in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament, held Friday afternoon at Navy Field at the University of North Carolina.
Wake Forest (8-11, 0-5 ACC) took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Lisa Andries, who scored off an assist from Jenny Everett following a Wake penalty corner. The Blue Devils (11-8, 2-3) tied the game just three seconds before halftime, however, as Melissa Panasci scored on a direct corner shot from Emily Ford and Cyndi Breyer. Panasci gave Duke a 2-1 lead just five minutes into the second half, scoring on another direct corner shot from Breyer and Schott. Wake rallied late in the game, however, and Andries knotted the score with her second goal of the day off an assist from Amanda Janney with 23:25 to go.
Duke outshot Wake 20-10 and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners. Wake Forest got an outstanding performance from goaltender Meaghan Nitka (11 saves), who kept WFU in the game with some key stops. Duke advances to the semifinals to face top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Virginia on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
